Microsoft- The Sleeping Giant
So here we are…
We have .NET 2.0 with some good enhancements...
We have VSTS 2005 that has some decent enhancements, except for the worthless VSTS Architect...
We have Vista the release at the end of the yellow brick road...
We have software factories, that are nice but nothing new, although it is encouraging to see MS catch up...
We have DSL, the biggest mistake MS has made since MSF…
We have the GAT, but what is its purpose for the common team?
We have MS certifications, a wasted memorization exercise...
We have Don Box, what? We do? We the heck is Don?...
We have CF 2.0, a mess of a mess and a team that has moved on…
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Well that about summarizes where I am at with my blogs, except of course the Don Box plug… I just wanna know where the heck he is?
So what is coming next?
Smart Client Software Factory, excellent… but lets reduce the complexity for the developer by 100 X's
GAT… A tool that in the world of Product Line Engineering cannot ignored.
SOA….. .. . The architectures that succeeded in the past have been propagated to the future.
The CAB… a quiet and tamed way to make use of it.
Abstraction by MS…. The Good, the bad, and the ugly.
MS… the giant appears to be sleeping… but in the shadows it labors and toils for your sole… I predict another massive mess of a release.
Tune in…. Or not…. A certification may save your sole….

No Thomas… I won't be defecting to Java any time soon. The closest I came was when JSP first hit the world, but I didn't like it then. It was very cumbersome. I am sure it has improved since then.
It's funny you mention WCF, we spent half the day on this site (http://wcf.netfx3.com/) today trying to decide if trashing one of our boxes or setting up a Virtual PC would be worth it yet. The last time I downloaded the windows workflow foundation it just blew up all over the place, but that was about 6 months ago. All this stuff is just abstraction layers and that makes me a little nervous. How well is it built? Who knows what team is hitting the mark and which ones aren't? I guess we will find out over the next few weeks as we begin to play with it. I'll let you know. It is weird how well some MS teams hit the mark, and others just build convoluted messes.
There is always light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to take the right tunnel. Thorough proof of concepts with anything MS releases is always a must. Just because they say it does something, doesn't mean it does it. If it doesn't work as advertised, and you can't modify it to work the way you need it to, you just add it to the pile of neat but useless tools. We had to do that with a lot of the ASP.NET 2.0 controls, Replication totally blows unless it is very basic, DSL is a complete waste, as well as VSTS Architect. But CAB, GAT, and ClickOnce kick butt.
